LSUS Invites Esteemed Poets Ignacio Carvajal Regidor and Jim Trainer for Readings and Workshops

April 04, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SHREVEPORT, LA- LSUS and the Department of English and Foreign Languages have invited poets Jim Trainer and Ignacio Carvajal to Shreveport to share their unique voices with our community from Thursday, April 11th, 2019 through Friday, April 12th, 2019.

The poetry of Ignacio Carvajal and Jim Trainer spans American borders and languages. Their readings explore working class, migrant, and literary experiences across the Americas. These award-winning poets have been invited to Shreveport by The Department of English and Foreign Languages at LSUS. Readings will open with critical commentary on the poets' work by LSUS faculty. Poetry will be performed in English, Spanish, and K'iche Maya.

The Department of English and Foreign Languages is committed to being a leader at fostering culture and arts in our region of Northwest Louisiana. For this reason the poets invited will not only read their works but also carry out writing and sound and rhythm workshops on campus as well as at The Agora Borealis at 421 Lake Street in Shreveport.

As Shreveport-Bossier's community grows and diversifies, it is important that we hear voices from across the Americas and open dialogue with our local artists. Jim Trainer and Igancio Carvajal share a multifaceted vision of what it means to be an artist/poet by creating works that explore the struggles of laborers, the passion of poets, and the experiences of migration and multi-lingual fluency. These are issues that connect Shreveport-Bossier with communities around the country and beyond, and help us commune with our neighbors here and abroad.

Ignacio Carvajal Regidor is Costa Rican. His poetry has appeared in places like the Acentos Review, the Rio Grande Review, and the anthology Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States. Ignacio won the Poetic Bridges Contest for 2018 from Casa Cultural de las Americas. This was an international Spanish language poetry competition. His book "Plegarias" will be published in November as part of his award for winning.
