LSUS Fall Commencement Scheduled for December 16

The LSU Shreveport Fall Commencement ceremony will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. at CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, LA. The commencement address will be given by Shirley M. Roberson, Director of Multicultural Affairs at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport.
Mrs. Roberson received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology from Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1971, and is a former biology instructor at Southern University-Shreveport. She has also been employed by several prestigious medical and research institutions which include: the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
For the past 34 years, she has been employed at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. She has held the position of Medical Research Specialist in the Department of Pediatrics, Infectious Disease Section, and currently holds the position as Director of Multicultural Affairs. In this position, her primary responsibilities are the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged students for the Schools of Medicine, Graduate Studies and Allied Health Professions.
Mrs. Roberson has also served on the Admissions Committee for nineteen years. In her current position, Mrs. Roberson has developed the "Partnerships in Science Education Pipeline," which consists of six Summer Enrichment Programs designed to: 1) identify two hundred students, grades, K-16 each summer who possess an aptitude for science and math; 2) provide courses and supplemental enrichment activities which strengthen academic performance; 3) provide hands-on research and shadowing opportunities at the LSUHSC; 4) provide stipends and scholarships; and 5) develop students who are academically competitive for entry into Health Professional Schools. Through her efforts she has generated over $4,000,000 dollars in grants for the implementation of these programs. Under her administration, hundreds of students have become Physicians and Allied Health Professionals.
