LSU Shreveport Reports Significant Increase in New Freshman and Graduate Enrollment
September 14, 2012
LSU Shreveport released enrollment numbers, showing a total of 4,535 students enrolled for the fall 2012 semester and reporting significant increases in both the numbers of new freshmen and new graduate students. Enrollment is comparable to the fall 2011 enrollment total of 4562, however, as LSUS saw a decrease in the number of transfer students, likely reflecting heightened transfer requirements put in place statewide by the Board of Regents and effective this fall. The loss was offset, however, by a 16% increase in the category of first-time, full-time degree-seeking freshman. LSUS continues to see an increase in the quality of entering students with the average ACT score increasing from a year ago.
The increase in first-time freshman enrollment can be attributed in part to new programs which began at LSUS this fall. At the undergraduate level, freshmen are drawn to a new partnership that allows students entering LSUS to pursue the LSU A&M Bachelors in Petroleum Engineering and Construction Management degrees. Additionally, the new LSUS Guaranteed Scholarship program has generated excitement among regional students, parents, and high school counselors. The LSUS Guaranteed Scholarship program awards all entering students with an ACT of 24 or higher significant funds in addition to their TOPS scholarship, making it possible for many students to earn their degree at no cost.
The number of new graduate students at LSUS also increased by 14% this fall, and online programs and concentrations continue to gain popularity. In particular, the online Masters in Health Administration degree continues to grow with a record number of students, showing an increase of 33% over last year. The Masters in Education also has an expanded online presence with a new 100% online concentration in English as a Second Language, with double-digit enrollment in its first semester.
New programs, scholarships, and delivery methods are the latest ways that LSUS is expanding to continue to meet the needs of northwest Louisiana. The partnerships between the university and other educational entities also show significant growth this fall, including the expansion of the LSUS Dual Enrollment Program, which provides early college experiences to students in 20 high schools across 4 parishes.
