LSU Shreveport Department of Communications Announces Fall Scholars
October 22, 2012
The LSU Shreveport Department of Communications is pleased to announce the fall 2012 Scholars in Communication. Students are selected by the faculty from mass communication and speech majors who have records of outstanding academic achievement and professional accomplishment.
Each student receives a monetary award supplied by royalties from the sale of the public speaking textbook, Introduction to Public Speaking. Six scholars have been named for the fall 2012 semester.
Linda Clayton is a junior public relations student who has returned to college after a professional career. "As a non-traditional student, I have found what I like most about my studies is the challenge," she noted. "I am always motivated by the challenge of higher learning."
Rani Graff is a senior public relations major who recently returned to Shreveport from Texas. "As a public relations major, the mass communications program here at LSUS has helped me develop better communication skills on a professional level," she said. "The program has also opened up networks for me which will help in my career after I graduate."
Mercedes Taylor is also studying public relations and is working for the student newspaper, The Almagest. "Every day in PR is different and you have to keep up," said Taylor.
Julie Thomas feels the same way about her work in the PR curriculum. "I love being a Public Relations major because it fits me perfectly," she said. "It feels so good to know I've finally found the right path."
Crystal Vandegriff is a junior journalism major whose work with The Almagest has expanded from writing to editing. "As a Mass Communication major studying journalism what I enjoy most is having the opportunity to learn from professors who have actually worked in the field that they are teaching," said Vandegriff.
Rebecca Wheeler, a senior in public relations, is interning at Sci-Port this semester. "I have enjoyed being challenged to new ideas and concepts through my academic career," she said. "Each semester I have really felt myself improving and it has been very rewarding."
Scholars are named each semester after an application and selection processes have been completed. For more information, contact Dr. Linda Webster in the LSUS Department of Communications at email@example.com.
