LSU Shreveport Debate Team Starts Season with Record Win
September 26, 2011
The LSU Shreveport Debate Team began its 2011-2012 competitive season by winning its first tournament at Henderson State University September 23-25. The team set a new International Public Debate Association (IPDA) record for most points earned by one program in a single tournament. The 99 points earned surpassed the 96 point previous record that the LSUS team set last spring.
Overall, the team placed first in the tournament out of 14 programs. Individually, 12 LSUS debaters earned placement in the elimination rounds. Julie Thomas, sophomore majoring in elementary education, and Austin LeMoine, sophomore majoring in biology, both made it to the final round in the Novice division sharing the championship title. Chelsea Anthony, junior with a double major in speech communication and English, made it to the finals in the Varsity division, losing on a 2-1 decision.
Next, the team will travel to LSU Alexandria October 14-16. Then the team will visit LSU Baton Rouge October 27-30.
