LSU Shreveport Debate Team Claims Season Ranking National Championship Title
April 04, 2012
The LSU Shreveport Debate Team returned from the last regular season tournament of the year with their fourth straight International Public Debate Association Season Ranking National Championship. The team set a new organizational season record at 561 total points.
The team also won the Professional Division Season Ranking National Championships. Caleb Brown, a junior education major, placed first for the season in the Novice Division out of more than 350 competitors.
Union University of Tennessee fell one point short of catching LSUS at the last tournament of the year and finished second with 560 points. LSUS coach Trey Gibson stated, "As one point equals one win over an entire season, this is as close to a photo finish as any competition can get. Both teams eclipsed last year's record setting pace and should be very proud of their performances. I'm just relieved we got that extra win."
The national titles were earned across the board by solid performances by all members of the LSUS team. In addition to Brown's novice national title, the team placed a total of 15 LSUS competitors in the top 10% of their respective divisions.
LSUS will be competing in the National Championship Tournament April 11-15 at Sam Houston State University.
