LSU Shreveport Debate Places Second at National Championship Tournament
April 11, 2011The LSU Shreveport Debate Team placed second in the International Public Debate Association National Championships this past weekend, hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University. The team won 17 awards at the tournament.
The team lived up to the pre-tournament hype by winning more than 65% of their preliminary rounds. The team advanced more than 73% of their entries into the elimination rounds.
Once elimination rounds were over, it was reported that there was a tie for first place in the tournament sweepstakes. The tie was between LSU Shreveport and Union University of Tennessee. Each team set a record by earning 100 total points in the tournament. Tournament coordinators attempted to break the tie by counting the number of entries that advanced to elimination rounds. Again, the two teams were tied. Tournament organizers used a point formula for each advancing member from each team. The LSU Shreveport Pilots lost this second tie-breaker by one point making this the closest national championship race in the history of the organization.
Three LSU Shreveport debaters finished their preliminary rounds undefeated (8 wins to 0 losses). Austin Lemoine, a freshman biology major and Dan Farris, a senior history major both were undefeated and the top 2 seeded competitors entering the Novice division elimination rounds. Colby Walker, a senior Business major, went undefeated in the Professional division. Additionally, John Kay, a December 2010 graduate of LSUS who is currently taking classes in preparation for joining the MBA program, finished the preliminaries with just one loss. Walker and Kay were the top 2 seeds in the Professional division. Kay also was the top speaker in the division giving him his first National Champion Professional Speaker title.
