LaPREP to Hold 20th Awards Ceremony

July 21, 2011
On Friday, July 22, the LSU Shreveport LaPREP program will hold its 20th awards ceremony. The 59 attendees, including 31 first-year participants and 28 returning, second-year participants, will be recognized at the ceremony at 1 p.m. in the University Center Theater.

At this year's ceremony, three former LaPREP graduates will attend and share their views on how LaPREP has impacted their lives. These students are: Lee Meadows, LaPREP 1994; Rolanda Reliford Clark, LaPREP 1996; and Patrick Harrington, LaPREP 2003. Each will share their views on how LaPREP has impacted their lives. Harrington is currently an LSUS junior and Student Government Association President.

LaPREP is a two-year math and science enrichment program for high ability middle and early high school students. LaPREP charges no fees or tuition of any kind, and the program provides lunches and transportation via SporTran bus passes.

In addition to classes in algebraic structures, logic, finance math, technical writing, engineering, and leadership skills, the students enjoy field trips. This year's participants visited the LSUS Red River Education and Research Park, the McNeil Pumping Station, the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center, the AEP/SWEPCO Arsenal Hill Power Plant and Sci-Port Discovery Center. Participants also hear from local engineers, scientists and mathematicians, most of them minority professionals, speaking about careers in their fields. The students also attend a Study Skills Seminar focusing on time management and effective study techniques.

No current or former participant of LaPREP has dropped out of high school, and all who have reached college age have enrolled in college. Every LaPREP graduate is eligible to receive a LaPREP Scholarship to LSUS for entering freshmen in the amount of $500 per semester. The award can continue for four years of college at LSUS and is given in addition to any level of TOPS award that a student receives from the State of Louisiana.
