Basij Khalkhali's Woodcutter's Epic, written in Farsi and published in Iran in 1965, is the world's only epic about Abraham Lincoln. Unlike most epics with which Western readers might be familiar-epics that follow Aristotle's template of a single great action elaborated with episodes-Basij's epic is a vast collection of individual poems that coalesce around a single great idea: the restoration of violated human rights. His Lincoln is as much a symbolic as a historical figure, a messiah whose genuine humanity and altruism promise hope to a suffering world.
