LSUS MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO TEXAS COLLEGE IN DARKNESS  (9/11/2009)

Shreveport, LA-The LSUS Pilots (1-3) were defeated by the Texas College Steers (1-0) 2-1, on Friday night at the Swamp. The Pilots had several chances to score in the first half with 6 shots on goal and a total of 10 shots. Zach Kelly led the way for LSUS with 2 shots on goal. Sam Weinberg had a total of two shots, one of which hit the crossbar that kept the Pilots off the board.

TC keeper, Matthew Rangel, had 6 saves in the first half. TC only had 5 shots, 2 on goal. LSUS keeper, Rogerio Celaya, made both saves as the two teams went to the break tied at zero with the rain clouds approaching.

The second half started prematurely with the threatening clouds off in the distance. The first goal of the game was scored by Texas College as Daniel Campos scored unassisted to give the Steers a 1-0 at the 54 minute.

The Pilots would answer the goal as William Awagu scored at 59:05 to tie the game at one a piece. Heavy winds and rain pounded the playing surface for about 10 minutes before lightning was detected.

The game was then stalled for a lightning delay, which was accompanied by the heavy showers. The rain slacked up but the threat of lighting keep the game at a halt for twenty minutes after the rain had stopped jeopardizing a full length game. The total time of the weather delay was 45 minutes.

With 31 minutes remaining on the game clock, the game resumed at 7:05 p.m. with the darkness creeping up on the swamp, knowing that the next goal scored could possibly be the game winner. TC's Daniel Campos scored his second goal of the game at 67:09 that would prove to be the game winner.

The Pilots battled their way through the defense but were unable to score as the game was called with ten minutes left on the game clock due to darkness.

LSUS definitely had their chances in the second half with 7 shots, but ran out of day light.

There were a total of 17 fouls called in the game, 11 from LSUS and 6 from Texas College. The one yellow card went to TC's Bertin Hernandez at the 79 th minute.

These two teams will match up again on Saturday, September 19 th at Texas College at 5 p.m.

Texas College will now travel to Jackson, Mississippi to play Belhaven tomorrow at 5 p.m.

LSUS' next game will be on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi as the Pilots take on William Carey at 4 p.m.

LSUS MENS SOCCER GAME AGAINST ETBU POSTPONED

The LSUS men's soccer game versus ETBU on Thursday, Sept. 10, has been postponed to a later date. The next game will be on Friday, Sept. 11, against Texas College at the Swamp at 5 p.m.

LSUS MEN'S SOCCER WINS FIRST GAME OF SEASON

The LSUS Pilots (1-2) men's soccer team won their first contest of 2009 as they defeated East Texas Baptist University Tigers (0-2-1) on Monday night in Marshall, Texas.

The first period brought a lot of opportunities for LSUS, with a total of 19 shots compared to ETBU's 5. The Pilots created some chances to score with some finely tuned passing but were unable find the back of the net.

LSUS had a good wager at their first goal when Daniel Broussard crossed to William Awagu who headed the ball past the ETBU keeper. The keeper quickly recovered and was able to keep the ball out of the net and the Pilots off the scoreboard.

The best chance the Pilots had in the first half was following a corner kick, when Theron Lockett banged one off the post and then the rebound ricocheted to Daniel Broussard who hit the other post.

The Pilots added 9 more shots in the second half with two of them on goal. Sam Weinberg crossed the ball to William Awagu, who scored his first goal of the season to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead at the 19 th minute of the second half.

LSUS played great defense as well, only allowing ETBU to take a total of 8 shots the entire game. Theron Locket, Reid Althage, Samuel Portales and Dillon Bowie did a fine job at breaking up ETBU's scoring chances. Rogerio Celaya made a total of 3 saves to lead the Pilots to victory.

Head Coach, Jed Jones, "That was an exciting game; we created a lot of opportunities. The guys played hard all game long and they were rewarded with the win. I knew the way we played in the first half that we would continue that in the second half we would have a great chance to win and we did."

The Pilots next game is on Thursday afternoon, at the Swamp on the campus of LSUS, with a rematch against the ETBU Tigers at 4 p.m.
