Fall commencement sees 255 receive degrees
LSUS conferred 255 degrees at commencement exercises Dec. 19, signaling the conclusion of a college career for some and a significant milestone in the journey toward additional degrees for others.

LSU System President Dr. William Jenkins delivered a challenging commencement address to a standing-room-only crowd in Shreveport's Expo Hall. He was pinch-hitting for U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., who, along with all other members of Congress, was asked by President George W. Bush to remain in Washington to complete critical congressional work.

Nearly 10 percent of the class - 24 - graduated with honors, led by Andrea Carol Lockey as the only graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Three others earned the distinction of summa cum laude (GPAs of 3.9 to 4.0), David Louis Dice Jr., Carolyn Nicole Hatfield and Jessica Lea Wagner.

Students with magna cum laude distinction (3.7 to 3.89 GPAs) were Stephanie Jill Bailey, David Andrew Fletcher, Elsie Lorene Ward Jones, Jessica Marie Knox, Lori Anne Lesniewski, Cara Danielle Teece, Cindy L. Vucinovich and Richard Allen Warren.

Graduating with the cum laude distinction (3.5 to 3.69 GPAs) were James Russell Bowker, Carrie Laine Collins, Sherri McGill Cox, Leah Margaret Forister, John A. Grant, Charles Burke Guin, Donna Spencer Herman, Alicia S. McClure, John Donald Miller, Judith Amber Stroud and Cathy Dempsey Zahn

Of the 255 students earning degrees from the university's four colleges, 42 of them received master's degrees - 19 Master of Science, 13 Master of Education, six Master of Business Administration and four Master of Arts. The other 213 students received bachelor's degrees - 110 Bachelor of Science, 58 Bachelor of Arts, 35 Bachelor of General Studies and 10 Bachelor of Criminal Justice.

The College of Liberal Arts had 82 of the graduates, the College of Business Administration and the College of Education each had 72, and the College of Sciences had 29.

Nine of the 255 were from outside Louisiana, two from Arkansas and one each from Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and Tennessee.
