Selber and Elrod professorships
receive Regents’ matching funds
The Louisiana Board of Regents presented checks representing matching funds for two LSUS endowed professorships in joint ceremonies in late August on the campus of Southern University – Shreveport.
Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education E. Joseph Savoie and W. Clinton “Bu bba” Rasberry Jr., a member of the Board of Regents from Shreveport, presented $40,000 checks to complete the endowments for the LSUS James K. Elrod Super Professorship in Health Administration and the LSUS Leonard and Mary Anne Selber Endowed Professorship for History and Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts.
The James K. Elrod Professorship in Health Administration was originally established in April of 2000, was fully endowed as a professorship 16 months later, and in August of 2005 funds were redirected to elevate it to a super professorship. The holder of the professorship, currently Dr. John Fortenberry Jr., associate professor of health administration, is chosen from among the full-time faculty associated with the Health Administration Program in the College of Liberal Arts, with the selection based on criteria of excellence in research and service.
The funding support associated with the professorship enables the holder to further various aspects of the Health Administration Program. The award is designated for a five-year, automatically renewable period. A faculty member is eligible to receive the professorship as long as he or she is full-time, involved in the Health Administration Program, active in program development and pursuing applied research on health care.
The LSUS Leonard and Mary Anne Selber Endowed Professorship for History and Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts was established in June of 2005 with substantial donations and pledges to LSUS from friends and members of the Selber family prior to the surprise announcement at the 2005 RiverBend Revue. The Selbers were honored on that occasion as the 2005 Pilots of the Year.
The professorship will provide critically needed funds annually to support and maintain a highly qualified faculty member in the LSUS History and Social Sciences Department. A professor designate has not yet been selected.
