Prepping
for the Future
Chancellor Vincent Marsala (top photo, standing) makes a comment to Dr. Carlos Spaht (seated right) at LaPREP graduation ceremonies. Seated at the table are (from left) Michael Bowman, a data processing analyst and an ordained minister; Dr. Stuart Mills, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs; Artis L. Terrell Jr.; Diana Gingles, and Spaht. Terrell, principal of The Williams Capital Group and a member of the Louisiana Board of Regents, was the featured speaker for the ceremonies. Gingles is assistant director of LaPREP and Spaht is a professor of mathematics, director of LaPREP and holder of the AEP SWEPCO LaPREP Professorship. LaPREP is a two-summer enrichment program which identifies, encourages, and instructs competent middle and early high school students, preparing them to complete a college degree program, in math, science or engineering. With emphasis on abstract reasoning, problem-solving, and technical writing skills, participants attend seven weeks of intellectually demanding classes and seminars, interspersed with field trips and recreation. Among last summer’s activities were a presentation by Reed Dickens (standing, middle photo), a 2000 LSUS graduate, 2006 LSUS Alumnus of the Year, and owner of Outside Eyes, Inc., and a chess challenge by John Gingles (bottom photo), a local chess master.
