Lady Pilots head basketball coach Ronnie Howell has signed seven new players to the 2006-07 roster.
Two are incoming freshman and the other five are transfers from junior college and other four-year universities.
Edie Leonards, of Hackberry, is a 5’7” junior transfer guard from Louisiana College, and Quan Joseph, of Breaux Bridge, is a 5’11” sophomore transfer post player from Tyler Junior College. Chandra Allen, of Wichita Falls, Texas, is a 5’4” junior transfer point guard from Lon Morris Junior College; Jamine Dettmering, of Port Byron, Ill., is a 5’9” junior transfer forward from Marshalltown Community College in Iowa, and Teokea Wilkerson, of Shreveport, is a 5’3” junior transfer point guard from the University of Arkansas Monticello.
Wilkerson was a standout point guard from Byrd High School and is coming home to finish her two years of eligibility.
The two incoming freshmen are Tish Flowers, a 5’7” point guard from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, and Terriyon Fairley, a 5’10” forward from Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge.
Returning players are senior leading scorer Jessica Kelly, who averaged 15.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and was named newcomer of the year in the GCAC; senior Moche Roqué, who averaged 11 points; junior Kacie Cryer, who averaged 6.6 points, and sophomore Janai Sells, who averaged 6.2 points.
“With our top three of four scorers coming back and the addition of seven ‘blue chip’ young ladies, this should be a fun year,” Howell commented. “We have experience at every position, and we think the two freshmen will come in and make an immediate impact as well. There will be competition for playing time at every position, and that should make us better and deeper than we have ever been.”
The Lady Pilots imposing non-conference schedule includes four exhibition games against NCAA Division I schools, and a home-and-home series with Lubbock Christian University, last year’s NAIA National Tournament runners-up.
“Our tough non-conference schedule should provide us with experience to do battle with conference foes Xavier, Dillard, SUNO, Loyola, Mobile, Spring Hill, Tougaloo, William Carey and Belhaven,” Howell said. “All four conference schools in New Orleans are playing this year, which will make for a grueling 18-game home-and-home conference schedule.” |
