LSUS unveiled plans in late October for the Dr. Lacy and Edie Williams Circle of Excellence Plaza, the largest single privately funded capital project in the university’s 40-year history.

Just after arriving in Germany, I quickly scurried across the Hamburg Airport in search of my waiting German acquaintance, anticipating the adventures ahead. As I rushed with excitement from the baggage area, I spotted a familiar sight that was at the same time a unique experience. My eyes were quickly overwhelmed with the native German surroundings, and lit with excitement when I depicted my name written in English on a sign in this German setting. My adventure had begun!
LSUS weightlifters reign as 2006 National Collegiate Champions (Page 2)
Weightlifting is considered a collegiate “club” sport because the only intercollegiate competition is conducted by USA Weightlifting at its regional meets and national championships. Those national championships were hosted in August by the LSUS USA Weightlifting Development Center, and LSUS lifters emerged as the 2006 National Collegiate Champions.

LSUS head men’s basketball coach Chad McDowell says the Pilots are “looking forward to another great season of exciting basketball.” He also has an answer for fans wondering how he plans to replace the handful of players he lost to graduation from the 2005-06 team that won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship trophies.

Former BellSouth executive Kevin McCotter has been an Executive-in-Residence in the LSUS College of Business Administration during the fall 2006 semester. He is also a member of the college’s Board of Visitors.

Red River Radio launches correspondent program (Page 5)
Red River Radio has launched a new program designed to get communities involved in producing local news.
Through the community correspondent program, volunteers in the listening region can report on events that are happening in their communities. Community correspondents are able to assist in every phase of the news gathering process, according to Kate Archer, Red River Radio’s news producer who developed the program.

Fall is under way at LSUS as the university begins a year-long celebration of 40 years of excellence since its founding date in 1967. And, the LSUS Foundation is busy accomplishing its mission! While I send a sincere thank you to all current Foundation members for their continued support, I sincerely invite new friends, alumni and community leaders to join our efforts and become part of this 40-year celebration of academic excellence at LSUS. The LSUS Alumni Association and LSUS Foundation recently co-sponsored and unveiled an alumni addition to the University’s Wall of Honor. Distinguished Alumni award recipients from 1985 to the present and Alumni Board presidents from 1979 to the present are featured in the new section. The dedication plaque reads, “In honor of those alumni who have given generously of their time, talents and resources to LSUS, thereby using their degrees and leadership skills to serve their communities and promote excellence in education.”

MicroSuite Database System Deployed
at the LSUHSC’s Affymetrix Core Facility (Online Extra Page 1)
Drs. Urška Cvek and Marjan Trutschl, assistant professors in the Department of Computer Science have been working with their students and Dr. John Sixbey, Dr. Rona Scott and Paula Polk (all LSUHSC) over the past two years to create a comprehensive database system for the Affymetrix Core Facility at LSUHSC-Shreveport. Their current students Brent Nycum, Phillip Kilgore, and former students Cade Cannon, Getachew Gebregziabher and Ashico Wilson were part of the team that designed and implemented the system.
