Dr. Laura McLemore (right in both photos), assistant curator and archivist, presents checks to the winners in the 2005-06 LSUS Archives and Special Collections Historical Essay Competition. Receiving the first place prize – the $1,200 William B. Weiner Jr. Award is Cay Green (top photo), an LSUS alumna and a history teacher at Caddo Middle Magnet School for her essay, “The Trucks of Santa Maria Produce: Charles Maggio’s Attempt to Preserve the Cultural Identity of Shreveport’s Little Italy.” Monica Pels, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in May, accepts the $800 Goodloe Stuck Award given as the second place prize for her essay on the Spring Street Museum building at 525 Spring Street in downtown Shreveport. Archives and Special Collections sponsors the awards annually for outstanding essays on historical topics to encourage historical research and scholarship by LSUS students, to foster interest in the history and culture of the Ark-La-Tex area and to promote the use of the LSUS Archives and Special Collections.
