What’s Really
in Cross Lake?
Dr.
Gary Joiner (foreground), an LSUS assistant professor
of history, helps marine archaeologist Darrell
Taylor lower a cesium magnetometer towed array
into Cross Lake in February as part of a search
for a World War II B-26 bomber reported to have
crashed in the lake. The Cross Lake search was
an extension of an expedition on Cross Bayou and
the Red River in search of four Confederate submarines
built in Shreveport during the Civil War. The mission
was led by archaeologist Ralph Wilbanks, who discovered
the “Hunley,” the first successful
combat submarine, and was financed by best-selling
author Clive Cussler. Of the search for the subs
on the bayou and river, Wilbanks told The (Shreveport) Times reporter John Andrew Prime, a 1978 LSUS graduate. “Most of the
time you find out where things aren’t. You
very seldom find where things are.”
(NOTE: The printed version of this issue of LSUS News referred to the airplane thought to be in Cross Lake as a "B-29," instead of a B-26. LSUS News apologizes for any inconvenience or embarrassment the typographical error may have caused.) |
