“I
am not sure anyone really knew what to expect last
year,” LSUS Lady Pilots soccer coach Jed Jones
recalled as he prepared for the university’s
second-ever season in intercollegiate women’s
soccer. “We were a new team in the highly competitive
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The players all met
just two weeks prior to taking the field for our
first conference game.” Basketball
recruiting proves fruitful (Page

LSUS
head men’s basketball coach Chad McDowell has
an answer for fans wondering how he plans to replace
the handful of players he lost to graduation from
the 2005-06 team. Before any dust could settle on
the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season
and tournament championship trophies, he had recruited
four players from NCAA Division I schools and a JUCO
standout. Winners

LSUS Foundation provides funding for Faculty Awards (Page
6)
The
LSUS Foundation has a rich history of encouraging
academic excellence through its Faculty Awards
program. Two years ago, in response to requests
from the LSUS academic colleges for more flexibility
and equity in these awards, the Foundation Board
of Directors began providing $3,000 to each of
the four colleges, which then established their
own criteria and selected the recipients for
the awards. This year’s Faculty Award recipients
are highlighted here.

Dark
skies and steady rain met LSUS staff and
alumni volunteers Thursday afternoon (May
4) as they gathered at Olde Oaks Golf Club
to set up for the next day’s 8th Annual
LSUS Alumni Association Capital One Pilots
Golf Classic. In spite of the bleak weather
forecast, spirits were high as workers donned
ponchos and drove the course to place sponsor
signage. Others opted for drier work and
set up registration or the silent auction.
Their dedication was rewarded on Friday with
breezes that blew the storms away by mid
morning and ushered in a perfect day of golf.
LSUS
grads well prepared; often cite faculty
excellence (Page
8)
Dr.
Vincent J. Marsala
Our graduates drop by quite regularly when they’re in town and reminisce
about their days at LSUS. While their stories vary as widely as their careers
and successes, they consistently emphasize how well LSUS prepared them for “life
in the real world.” That preparation is nearly always punctuated with
anecdotes about favorite professors who have had a lasting influence on them.
Those anecdotes point to the excellence of our faculty. I asked the deans for
a representative sample of faculty excellence to share with you.
