Annual
meeting set for May 26
All
alumni are invited to attend the Annual Meeting May
26 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the third floor of Noel Memorial
Library on the LSUS Campus. Following a time of networking
and refreshments, alumni will attend a brief business
meeting and then tour the James Smith Noel Collection.
The business meeting will include a presentation and
acceptance of the 2005-06 slate of officers and nominees
for the Alumni Association Board. Plans for the upcoming
year will be discussed.
James Smith “Sunny” Noel was a local businessman
and scholar who spent approximately 70 years developing
a collection of more than 200,000 books. Since 1995
the Noel Collection has been housed on the third floor
of Noel Memorial Library at LSUS. At least half of the
books were printed before the middle of the 1900s and
some are quite rare. Among the most noteworthy is a
copy of Aesop’s Fables printed in Paris in 1549,
which is one of only three copies in the world. The
other two are at Yale in Connecticut and Cambridge University
in England. Two of the books were once owned by Isaac
Newton and Theodore Roosevelt. Many have beautiful illustrations,
often printed from engraved plates and sometimes colored
by hand. There are many other fascinating items included
in the collection, which is available for public viewing.
All alumni are invited to attend the event, but reservations
are required. Please call the Alumni Office at 318-797-5190
or alumni@lsus.edu
to register. Dues-paying members of the Association
will receive invitations in the mail. |
