Dr. Robert C. Leitz III, professor of English,
curator of the James Smith Noel Collection and chair
designate of the Ruth Herring Noel Endowed Chair for
the Curatorship of the James Smith Noel Collection,
has had Imagining the Sciences: Expressions of New Knowledge
in the Long Eighteenth Century published by AMS Press
in New York. The book, co-edited by Kevin L. Cope, of
LSU A&M, is the 13th book Leitz has had published.

Dr. Malcolm McCallum, assistant professor of
biological sciences, has been named coordinator of the
Research Working Group for the Southeast U.S. Division
of Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. As
coordinator, he will develop the research working group
and coordinate amphibian and reptile research and researchers
throughout the southeast United States..jpg)
¦ Dr. Elizabeth M. Zippi, professor
of chemistry, and Evan Kamperman, a
chemistry student, had a manuscript published in The
Proceedings of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences. “Synthesis
of [13C6]Poly(Styrene) for PET,” was an extension
of the work Zippi recently had published in the Journal
of Labeled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals.

Dr. Wolfgang Hinck, assistant professor of
marketing, had his paper, “The Role of Domestic
Animosity in Consumer Choice: Empirical Evidence from
Germany,” accepted for publication in the Journal
of Euromarketing, Vol. 14, No. 1/2. Between the spring
and summer semesters, Hinck took eight LSUS students
and 23 students from other U.S. universities on a three-week
field trip to Germany. The trip consisted of lectures,
road trips and cross-cultural activities with German
students. For the lectures, 20 professors from five
countries came to Lüneburg in Northern Germany
and conducted seminars covering a variety of international
business topics. The students also visited companies
such as Volkswagen and toured cities such as Berlin
and Hamburg. Evening activities were organized by German
students who also provided free accommodations for their
visitors. Traveling with Hinck were LSUS students Shelby
Alfred, Jenny Bromhall, James Edmonson, Jacob Hankins,
Jon Harmon, Amber Hays, Jacquelin Reppond and Katherine
Robbins. Hinck also delivered the keynote address
at the Sales and Marketing Executives International
meeting in Shreveport in September. His speech covered
cutting-edge research findings in the areas of customer
value, satisfaction and loyalty. The meeting was attended
by more than 50 sales and marketing managers and entrepreneurs.
And, Hinck had a paper, “Marketing Orientation
of Mexican Companies,” (with Dr. Reto Felix, Universidad
de Monterrey/UC Berkeley) accepted for publication in
the Journal of Interna tional
Marketing.
¦ Dr. Megan L. Conway, professor
of French and professor designate for the Sybil T. &
J. Frederick Patten Professorship for Excellence in
Teaching, presented a paper, “Renaissance Marketing
Strategies: Letters Framing the Poetry of Pernette du
Guillet and Louise Labé,” at the Society
for Sixteenth-Century Studies in Toronto, Canada in
October.
¦ Dr. Bernadette Jones Palombo,
associate professor of criminal justice, was the primary
researcher on the report, “The Provision of the
Right to Counsel in Caddo Parish, Louisiana,”
issued in July. Dr. Jeff Sadow, associate
professor of political science, assisted with the economic
analysis. The report, which appears on the Web site
of the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers
and was presented to the newly appointed Governor’s
Task Force on Indigent Defense, chaired by state Sen.
Lydia Jackson (D-Shreveport), has been referred to by
The Associated Press as “the latest in a series
of sharply critical reviews of how Louisiana defends
the poor.” Palombo and Sadow also presented their
findings at a meeting of the Northwest Louisiana Association
of Criminal Defense Attorneys and have submitted an
abstract to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences
to present their findings at the academy’s annual
conference next spring.
¦ The LSUS Alpha Guarde named Dr. William
D. Pederson the recipient of its Institution
Builder Award and Susan Wood the recipient
of its Service to Students Award. Pederson, a professor
of political science, director of the LSUS International
Lincoln Center and chair designate of the American Studies
Endowed Chair, received his award for distinguished
service to students, the university and the larger community
by establishing and sustaining the LSUS American Studies
Program. Wood received her award for distinguished service
to the university as director of cooperative education
and coordinator of the Master of Business Administration
program in the College of Business Administration. Alpha
Guarde officers elected for two-year terms are: Dr.
Alan Thompson, president; Dr. Vince
Marsala, vice president; Mike Ferrell, treasurer,
and Sue Carroll, secretary.
¦ Dr. Karen James, associate
professor of marketing, was an invited speaker to the
“Best Practices for Early Professors” consortium
at the Marketing Management Association’s Fall
Educator Conference. She has also assumed webmaster
duties for the Marketing Management Association’s
Web site. And, her paper, “An Examination of the
Visual Element of Service Advertisements,” co-authored
with Ken Clow, Christine Berry, and Kris Kranenburg,
has been accepted for publication in the Marketing Management
Journal of 2005.

Tiffany Johnson, an August 2004 graduate of
LSUS with a degree in mass communications-public relations,
has joined the LSUS staff as an admissions counselor
in the Office of Admissions and Records. While attending
LSUS she was president of Delta Sigma Theta sorority,
a resident assistant at University Court (on-campus
student housing) and student mentor, along with a number
of other activities.

Katie Shaver, a May 2003 LSUS graduate with
a Bachelor of Science in environmental science, has
joined the LSUS staff as an admissions counselor in
the Office of Admissions and Records.
