Chemistry
professors conduct research
using NIH/LBRN grant worth $50,853
Two
LSUS chemistry professors are using nearly $51,000 in
funding from the National Institutes of Health through
the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network (LBRN) Summer
Faculty Research Program to conduct research in collaboration
with counterparts at LSU A&M.
Dr. Brian Salvatore, an LSUS associate
professor of chemistry, and Dr. Elahe Mahdavian,
an LSUS assistant professor of chemistry, are using
the $50,853 award from the U.S. Department of Health
& Human Services unit for their research project,
“Synthesis and Study of Novel Template Based Ion
Channels.” The research is being carried out in
collaboration with the LSU A&M Department of Chemistry.
Applications for the LSUS couple’s research work
include the development of new types of chemical biosensors
which could be used for detection of particular agents
within the body or the environment. This type of research
has potential impact for future biomedical, environmental
and pharmaceutical applications and is of interest to
several federal agencies, such as National Institutes
of Health (NIH), the Environmental Protection Agency
and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The LBRN is supported by the NIH’s Biomedical
Research Infrastructure Network Program and is devoted
to the enhancement of biomedical research throughout
Louisiana. LBRN focuses on improving the research capabilities
of selected universities by increasing access to research
infrastructure, training and mentoring of faculty, graduate
and undergraduate students and the development of research
collaborations among researchers at participating institutions.
