Red
River Radio to develop series
with Feist-Weiller Cancer Center
Susan
Reeks
Development Director
Red River Radio
Red River Radio’s popular call-in health care
series “Health Matters” will devote four
of its upcoming programs to Cancer beginning in August.
Doctors and staff-members from Feist-Weiller Cancer
Center will help develop the themes and content of the
four-part, monthly series which will cover Cancer research,
new treatment options, patient services and more.
When asked about the partnership with Red River Radio,
Dr. Jonathan Glass of Feist Weillor Cancer Center said,
“The treatment of cancer is extremely complex
and is under continual flux. Development of new knowledge
about the causes of cancer and development of new therapeutic
approaches take place at academic cancer centers. The
listeners to Red River Radio are fortunate to have in
their region the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU
Health Sciences Center which is honored to be asked
to participate in the creation of this series for ‘Health
Matters.’ The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center has
three divisions: One concentrating on the basic science
of cancer, one on cancer treatment, and one on prevention
and control of cancer. In the series we will bring faculty
from these different areas to give the Red River Radio
Network listeners a wide ranging view of the war on
cancer from the inside: from new details derived from
science to new approaches to treatment to new ways to
prevent cancer.”
“Health Matters” is a monthly call-in healthcare
series on the Red River Radio Network (89.9FM in Shreveport)
that has covered such topics as Alzheimer’s Disease,
Women & Heart Disease, HIPPA Regulations, Children
& Nutrition and Hypertension. “Health Matters”
guest doctors and healthcare professionals are chosen
without regard to sponsorship dollars so that listeners
can get objective healthcare information about current
healthcare topics.
“Previous ‘Health Matters’ have been
informative, entertaining, and sometimes, tragic when
callers have identified some of the monumental health-related
challenges they have had to face,” says Executive
Producer Susan Reeks. “Some of our goals for ‘Health
Matters’ include sharing trustworthy health information,
promoting good prevention strategies, and encouraging
dialogue between healthcare organizations and individuals.”
“Health Matters” has developed quite a following
in the short time it has been on the air which can be
evidenced by the number of calls received during each
program and by the number of doctors, nurses and non-profit
healthcare agency representatives who have called during
segments or afterwards to comment on the program. Listeners
can hear “Health Matters” on the last Thursday
of each month at 6:00pm.
The
Red River Radio Network provides news, information and
entertainment to a large geographical area, broadcasting
as KDAQ at 89.9 FM in Shreveport, KLSA at 90.7 FM in
Alexandria, KLDN at 88.9 FM in Lufkin, KBSA at 90.9
FM in El Dorado, and on the Lincoln Parish translator
at Grambling State University at 90.7 FM. The network
is licensed to the LSU Board of Supervisors and headquartered
on the campus of LSUS.
