6th Annual LSUS Hibernia Pilots Golf Classic
exceeds goal of $20,000 for scholarships

The damaging thunderstorms that pummeled the Ark-La-Tex in June were nowhere in sight on May 7 when 152 golfers gathered at Olde Oaks Golf Club in Haughton for the 6th Annual LSUS Hibernia Pilots Golf Classic. In fact, blue skies and temperatures in the mid-80s provided close-to-perfect weather for the sellout event.

The tournament, which is the primary fundraising event for Alumni Association academic and Athletic Department scholarships, netted $20,300, an increase of 35 percent over the 2003 proceeds.

The growth of the tournament and its high level of success are due in large part to the faithful sponsors who support the Classic year after year, area businesses who donate prizes and silent auction items, and alumni and staff volunteers who volunteer their time. Tournament features included the Hibernia National Bank Fiesta Finale, Campus Federal Credit Union Putting Contest, Moffitt Volkswagen Hole-In-One Contest, a Silent Auction, and the Chancellor’s Challenge (a $100 prize sponsored by Dr. Vince Marsala that goes to the highest scoring team with a “challenge” to use the prize money to improve their handicap before next year’s tournament).

Twenty-five renewing sponsors and 13 new sponsors made up this year’s 38 teams. In spite of extremely busy schedules, Dr. William L. Jenkins, LSU System president; Dr. Robert Rasmussen, LSU System assistant vice president for system relations, and John W. Milazzo Jr., president/CEO, Campus Federal Credit Union and CFCU board members took time to come up from Baton Rouge. Other South Louisiana players included Louis Cook, Paragon Casino Resort vice president for security, and the Paragon team from Marksville, and coach Charlie Cryer and his team from Vermilion Parish Catholic High School in Abbeville. Cryer’s daughter Kacie will play for the Lady Pilots basketball team this fall.

The LSUS Alumni Association and Athletic Department are indebted to the sponsors, prize donors (listed on this page) and the following volunteers for helping to raise the bar yet again for the Annual Golf Classic:

The 7th Annual Hibernia Pilots Golf Classic is scheduled for Friday, May 6, 2005.
