Technology Center opens doors for alumni

On May 25, Alumni Association members and guests enjoyed a reception, shopping in the new LSUS Bookstore, a presentation by Dr. Donna Austin, dean of continuing education and public service, a tour of the Campuswide Lab and demonstration of a “Smart” Classroom by Jeff Key, instructor of computer science.

Outgoing President Ed Jones and Larry Norris, secretary, who is retiring from the board after six years of service, were presented engraved watches. Jones will continue to serve through the 2004-05 term. The Board also thanked and recognized retiring members David Finck, Melissa Simon and Mike Woods, all of whom have served for at least four years.

Kady McClure, Alumni Association College of Business Administration Scholarship winner, and her mother, Michelle, were recognized. Other recipients of the $1,000 annual scholarships are Mary Beth Lavery, College of Education and Human Development; Yolanda D. Welch, College of Liberal Arts; and Thomas L. Brantley, College of Sciences.

Two new board members were elected – Brian Pasquier (BGS ‘02), project director, Manufacturing Extension Partnership of Louisiana (MEPOL), and Brian Wooten (B.S., Education, ‘91), executive director, Brentwood Research Institute. New officers for 2004-05 are Pam Simek, president; Randy Brown, vice president; Scott Wolf, treasurer; and Janet Maines, secretary.

Alumni Director Dianne Howell reported that Alumni Association membership has increased to more than 400 members or approximately 3.3percent of the graduate population (the national average is 2 percent). She also discussed projects that benefited the university in the 2003-04 year: Signature Wines Premier Party, bus trip to the LSU-Arkansas football game, commencement receptions for graduates and the Golf Classic. Membership dues and other revenue sources allow the Alumni Association to help cover maintenance costs for the alumni database; fund the Annual Scholars Campaign; pay sorting, bundling & labeling costs for LSUS News; award four $1,000 scholarships annually; participate in campus events, and provide giveaway items for new graduates and visitors.

The 2004-05 Board will meet for the first time this summer to discuss fundraising, community service projects, recruiting and the alumni Web site. If you would like to serve on any of these committees, please contact Dianne Howell at 318-797-5190 or alumni@lsus.edu.
