South Louisiana sportswoman Chantel Broussard (left) communicates with her daughter, Alicia Landry at the LSUS National Girls and Women in Sport Day Recognition Ceremony. Chantel and Alicia, both of whom are deaf, were recognized at the ceremony for their achievements in sports. They signed comments to a packed University Center Theater with an interpreter. Seated next to Alicia is her grandmother, Linda Broussard, and her adapted physical education teacher, Sue Cobb.

Vicki Owen connects on a serve in the Women’s Doubles 8.0 competition of the LSUS National Girls and Women in Sports Day Tennis Tournament in late January. Owen, an adjunct tennis teacher in the LSUS Kinesiology and Health Science Department, was named in December to the U.S. Tennis Association’s 2003 USA Tennis All-American Team, which recognized 27 tennis teachers across the nation who have excelled in implementing the USTA’s local USA Tennis programs for people of all ages and abilities. Owen is an active supporter of tennis in the Shreveport-Bossier area and is a member of the Northwest Louisiana Tennis Association, which donated new wind screens for the LSUS tennis courts. Owen teamed with Anita Randall to finish second in their division in the NGWSD Tennis Tournament.

Sherri Allen (left), news anchor for KTBS-TV and an avid sportswoman, goes over the LSUS National Girls and Women in Sports Day Recognition Ceremony agenda with LSUS Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ronnie Howell and Dr. Cay Evans, professor of education and organizer of the event. Evans was the recipient of the 2004 National Association of Girls and Women in Sports Pathfinder Award representing the state of Louisiana. The NAGWS Pathfinder Awards were established in 1991 to provide national recognition to women who have demonstrated continuous dedication to the advocacy, recruitment and enhancement of girls and women in sports and sports leadership in their states. Each state association represented in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance has the opportunity to select a recipient to be recognized nationally as a Pathfinder. Evans received the award at the Alliance’s national convention in New Orleans.
