Marty Young (left), assistant director of the LSUS Pioneer Heritage Center, commands West’s Battery in a demonstration of an 1860s artillery drill firing at Pioneer Day in October. The Civil War vintage cannon is used in battle re-enactments. Capt. Terry Mitchell, who heads West’s Battery, said the crew routinely carries both Union and Confederate uniforms to a re-enacement because they don’t always know from which side of the battle line they’ll be firing their cannon. Young is a West’s Battery regular.
