From its inception American Studies has sponsored distinguished speakers, including the novelist Saul Bellow, the first Nobel Laureate ever to lecture in Shreveport. Lectures, stage portrayals, special exhibits, concerts and symposia are offered to local audiences. Since 1998, half-day symposia - the Cross-Currents/Heroes of the Humanities Series - comprise the main American Studies offerings during the spring semester. Recently, coverage by C-SPAN expanded the audience to a national one. Further recognition of the caliber of the offerings is evident in underwriting from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH).
