A distinguished annual Abraham Lincoln Lecture/Symposia is offered each fall to commemorate America's unique contribute to democratic leadership. The only annual Lincoln event in Louisiana, it is an outgrowth of the first Summer Teacher Institute on Abraham Lincoln for secondary teachers ever held in the nation. That landmark institute was conducted at LSU in Shreveport, in cooperation with the Abraham Lincoln Association and the International Lincoln Association. The institute was funded by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). The lecture has received C-SPAN coverage, and has been a recipient of an award from the Abraham Lincoln Association and underwriting from the LEH. It is named in honor of Frank J. Williams, Chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and his wife Virginia, an active lecturer. Joining with Mrs. Williams to participate in these charter Lincoln events on the LSUS campus was her mother, Myra Miller, a Louisiana native and graduate of Byrd High School in Shreveport. Like her daughter, Mrs. Miller retired after 27 years as an elementary school teacher.
