Instructor guidelines for placing materials on reserve

Faculty who wish to place materials on reserve should fill out the attached form and return it, along with the reserve items, to the Library Circulation Desk. Please allow at least one business day for processing of reserve materials. All materials submitted for reserve are subject to the rules governing copyright, as defined in U.S. Code, Title 17, Section 107. Certain copyrighted materials such as photocopied journal articles or book chapters will be accepted in accordance with the guidelines below:

  • Generally the library should own a copy of the item from which the photocopy was made.
The photocopied portion of the work should be relatively small in relation to the work as a whole.
The photocopied material should be accompanied by copyright clearance, UNLESS the instructor's decision to use said material was not planned in advance of the course. (For instance, the material is newly published or newly discovered after the course preparations and syllabus have been made, so that there is not enough time to request and receive permission to use from the copyright owner).
Under no circumstances will a photocopied item be accepted for reserve for more than one semester, UNLESS copyright clearance has been obtained and a copy of said clearance accompanies the material.
  • Items generated by the instructor, i.e. notes or sample tests, will be accepted with no restrictions.
