Criminal Justice
A Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice provides students
with knowledge of and a basic understanding in the practices
and problems within major fields in criminal justice including
law enforcement, courts/judiciary, corrections, forensic
science and private security, as well as juvenile justice
administration and probation and parole. The criminal justice
curriculum assists students in developing a number of skills
essential to effective job performance within the fields
of criminal justice, including analytical thinking, written
and communication skills, as well as an appreciation for
the values and operations of the legal, criminal justice
and juvenile justice systems.

Electronic Media Journalism
In our media-rich culture, learning how to produce and manage news in a variety of electronic formats is critical for anyone wishing to enter the field of broadcasting. Newscasters, editors, and production professionals are expected to write blogs and to produce short features for social networking sites as well as work in the traditional studio setting to create news programs for television and radio broadcast. LSUS students will work in the campus studio to produce feature programming followed by senior year internships at professional media production facilities in off-campus locations.

English
Students majoring in English receive a comprehensive background
in British and American literature, with opportunities
to explore in depth topics
of personal interest. The introductory course acquaints students with
various theories of literary criticism, how to apply them, and how to
write analytically about literature. The upper-level courses allow students
to study writers from the major periods of both American and British
literature.

Fine Arts
The major thrust of the LSUS art program is graphic design.
We have one of the largest and best equipped computer
graphics labs in the state. Graphic design graduates
regularly find employment with local advertising
agencies, outdoor sign companies, corporate art departments,
printers, and speciality companies such as silk screening.
Several of our students are internationally known
for computer game design. Our department also offers
the student interested in classical art a variety
of course options including various levels of drawing,
sculpture, acrylic painting, watercolor, art history
and ceramics..

French
The
French major gives students a solid background in and
an understanding
of the language, culture, and literature
of France. Students learn to read, write and communicate
in French. Mastery of a second language opens doors to
a broad spectrum of career opportunities in fields of tourism,
fashion design, teaching, law, translation, the food industry,
and business – to name only a few. Combined with
LSUS’s International Studies Minor, the French major
is particularly attractive to employers with global interests
who need employees who can speak another language and who
are sensitive to cultural differences.

General
Studies
The General Studies Program provides an opportunity for
mature students to create an individualized, interdisciplinary
program of study designed to fit their educational and
professional goals, particularly when those goals cannot
be served by way of traditional degree programs. The program
allows students to make full use of courses taken at other
accredited institutions, and to choose an area of concentration
that will combine different fields of study in creative,
innovative ways. Through careful advising, students are
encouraged to design a course of study to meet their personal
needs and interests and to prepare them for the job market.

Degree
Students majoring in geography will receive an extensive knowledge in the physical,
cultural, and technological aspects of the discipline. The degree prepares students
for advanced degrees in geography, meteorology, geographic information systems,

Journalism
The traditional field of news reporting for print publications now includes an exciting blend of web design, writing, and social networking as reporters move out of the newsroom and report from every corner of the world. Students will learn the basic skills of news writing and editing as well as media ethics and law. The weekly student newspaper, The Almagest, is published in both print and electronic formats, providing a wealth of practical experience for student journalists before going off campus to complete senior year internships in local media outlets..

Communications
Students majoring in mass communications will prepare for careers in public relations, broadcasting, and print journalism by developing a wide variety of writing, speaking, and production skills tailored to the multi-media world of news. A new minor in film studies provides students with courses in critical and cultural theories of film analysis. Practical applications include work on the student newspaper, The Almagest, in both print and electronic formats, production work in the television studio, and a senior-year internship in a specialized placement.

Political Science
An undergraduate degree in political science prepares

Public Relations
Media students who wish to work in government or business will choose the public relations concentration. Courses cover the history and theory of public relations including a focus on media campaigns, work in the nonprofit business sector, and persuasive techniques. As with all mass communication courses, the public relations students will become familiar with computer design, new media broadcast techniques, and writing for social networking audiences. In the senior year, students will intern under the direction of a community professional in the field.

Spanish
Students who major in Spanish acquire the necessary reading,
writing, speaking, and listening skills that enable them
to use the Spanish language with ease and precision. In
addition, they study the culture and literature of Spain
and Latin America, and may elect to take specialized courses

law enforcement, and health care. A degree in Spanish is

Theatre
Theatre students participate in both performance and production of an ambitious range of live plays on campus. Recent productions in the Black Box Theatre have received excellent media reviews, particularly those new and experimental plays with small casts. The program includes courses in the history of theatre as well as courses in acting, directing, and technical skills. Students are expected to participate in all areas of theatre, earning credit for work on stage and behind the scenes..
