Criminal Justice
A Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice provides students with knowledge of and a basic understanding in the practices and problems within major fields in criminal justice including law enforcement, courts/judiciary, corrections, forensic science and private security, as well as juvenile justice administration and probation and parole. The criminal justice curriculum assists students in developing a number of skills essential to effective job performance within the fields of criminal justice, including analytical thinking, written and communication skills, as well as an appreciation for the values and operations of the legal, criminal justice and juvenile justice systems.

English
Students majoring in English receive a comprehensive background in British and American literature, with opportunities to explore in depth topics of personal interest. The introductory course acquaints students with various theories of literary criticism, how to apply them, and how to write analytically about literature. The upper-level courses allow students to study writers from the major periods of both American and British literature.

General Studies
The General Studies Program provides an opportunity for mature students to create an individualized, interdisciplinary program of study designed to fit their educational and professional goals, particularly when those goals cannot be served by way of traditional degree programs. The program allows students to make full use of courses taken at other accredited institutions, and to choose an area of concentration that will combine different fields of study in creative, innovative ways. Through careful advising, students are encouraged to design a course of study to meet their personal needs and interests and to prepare them for the job market.

Geography Degree
Students majoring in geography will receive an extensive knowledge in the physical, cultural, and technological aspects of the discipline. The degree prepares students for advanced degrees in geography, meteorology, geographic information systems, data analysis, and remote sensing. The degree provides the student with a broad basis for positions in the public and private sector.

History Degree
An undergraduate degree in history prepares students for a variety of academic and corporate career opportunities, including the pursuit of advanced degrees in history, law, and education. The degree provides the student with a well-rounded education that private and public business sectors desire.

Fine Arts
The major thrust of the LSUS art program is graphic design. We have one of the largest and best equipped computer graphics labs in the state. Graphic design graduates regularly find employment with local advertising agencies, outdoor sign companies, corporate art departments, printers, and speciality companies such as silk screening. Several of our students are internationally known for computer game design. Our department also offers the student interested in classical art a variety of course options including various levels of drawing, sculpture, acrylic painting, watercolor, art history and ceramics..

French
The French major gives students a solid background in and an understanding of the language, culture, and literature of France. Students learn to read, write and communicate in French. Mastery of a second language opens doors to a broad spectrum of career opportunities in fields of tourism, fashion design, teaching, law, translation, the food industry, and business – to name only a few. Combined with LSUS’s International Studies Minor, the French major is particularly attractive to employers with global interests who need employees who can speak another language and who are sensitive to cultural differences.

Mass Communications
Students majoring in mass communications are well prepared for the varied life of a journalist or public relations practitioner. Journalism majors are prepared to excel at newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations and at enterprises using the internet. Students are encouraged to participate in the student newspaper, The Almagest, and to take part in student organizations affiliated with the career field of their choice.

Political Science
An undergraduate degree in political science prepares students with reasoning and analytical skills, as well as competence in oral and written expression, so that they may enter federal, state and local government, private work within interest groups, campaign management and political polling, as well as pursue advanced degrees in the law, education, journalism and political science.

Spanish
Students who major in Spanish acquire the necessary reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that enable them to use the Spanish language with ease and precision. In addition, they study the culture and literature of Spain and Latin America, and may elect to take specialized courses designed for specific professions in the areas of business, law enforcement, and health care. A degree in Spanish is highly beneficial for students interested in a wide variety of careers, including teaching, law, medicine, translating and interpreting, and the social services, to name just a few.

Speech
Students choosing to major in speech are given a broad curriculum designed to broaden skills in and appreciation for oral communication. They are also encouraged to participate in debate and become members of the nationally known debate team.

Sociology Degree
Students majoring in sociology will receive the highest degree of education to prepare them for careers in human services, social services, criminal justice, education, government, research and business. The sociology curriculum offers an excellent foundation for advanced study in fields such as program administration, law enforcement, and data analysis.
