Elisabeth Liebert has a PhD in English and an MA in English from the Universities of Otago and Canterbury respectively, both located in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand. She also spent a year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a Fulbright Graduate Scholarship, an experience that changed the focus of her dissertation and (ultimately) her future.

Elisabeth’s dissertation explores dialogue and character in the poems of John Milton, using speech act theory and seventeenth century insights into the impact of speech on the social and spiritual identity of its addressee. She has three published articles on Milton and has given conference papers in New Zealand, France, and North America. Beyond Milton, her research interests include other topics from the early modern period: women’s literature, conduct literature, and spiritual autobiographies. She is currently working on an article that links drama, memory, and Epicurean philosophy in Margaret Cavendish’s The Convent of Pleasure.
