Thomas Du Bose is a native of Texas and obtained his Ph. D. in English and Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in spring of 1990. His doctoral work focused on the history of the English language, with the subject of his thesis being 20th-century usage criticism. His other fields of interest include folklore, mythology, and the paranormal as represented in legend and literature, from ancient to modern. He has presented numerous papers on these various topics at scholarly conferences around the country.

His teaching load at LSUS routinely includes Introduction to Linguistics, World Literature, and Greek and Roman Literature in Translation. He is currently preparing courses on linguistics, folklore, and the paranormal in literature. He has been the faculty sponsor for the LSUS English Club for ten years and has been active in campus politics, having served as a Faculty Senator from Liberal Arts and as Faculty Senate President for the 2001-2002 academic year. In 2001, he received from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities a Special Humanities Award for his work in literacy and reading programs in Northwest Louisiana. An incident at the ceremony for this award sums up Dr. Du Bose’s attitude toward himself and his teaching. Preceded on the platform by a teacher who attributed her success in the classroom to her ability to adapt a character from history or literature and play it to perfection, Du Bose announced, “I’ve never had to adapt a character in the classroom. I am a character.”
