Helen Powell earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 1997. In 1999, she earned her Master’s of Arts in Sociology from Baylor University. She received her Ph.D. in December of 2003 from Baylor University. Ms. Powell has also taught at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas as an adjunct instructor of Sociology. In 2000, Ms Powell joined the faculty of LSUS as an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of History and Social Sciences. Ms. Powell currently teaches Introduction to Sociology, Race, Class, and Gender, Population, Urban Sociology and Research Methods.

Ms. Powell’s research interests include community based research and program evaluations. Since joining the faculty, she has consulted on applied research projects for Northwestern State University Nursing School, the Louisiana State Police Association, the Department of Community Development of the City of Shreveport and Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal.

Her previous work includes research in the area of the effects of ethnic concentrations on the employment of minority women. Recent work concerns the impact of casino gambling on the quality of life of residents in host communities. Her work has been presented at conferences for the American Sociological Association, the Southwestern Social Sciences Association and the Society for Applied Sociology.
