Dr. R. Blake Dunnavent received his B.A. from Abilene Christian University in 1990. He received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas Tech University in 1992 and 1998. His major field is American history with a concentration in military/naval history. After teaching briefly at Idaho State University, he joined the faculty at LSUS in Fall 2002.

Dr. Dunnavent=s publications include the book Brown Water Warfare: The U.S. Navy in Riverine Warfare and the Emergence of a Tactical Doctrine, 1775-1970, and numerous articles in such journals as The American Neptune and The Florida Historical Quarterly. He has also published chapters in books including Grant=s Lieutenants Vol 1. and the forthcoming Victorious Generals: The Elements of Successful Command in the Civil War. In addition, he has presented many conference papers and written book reviews for historical journals. He is also active in professional organizations such as NASOH (North American Society for Oceanic Historians), where he serves as the Associate Editor for their newsletter, the Naval Historical Foundation, and the Gulf South Historical Association. As a faculty member, he is currently the advisor for Phi Alpha Theta (National History Honor Society).

His hobbies include shooting, fishing, reading, and watching movies.
