Dr. Blakeney earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Applied Piano from Mississippi University for Women in 1967. She also received a Master of Music in Music Literature in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Musicology in 1988, both from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Blakeney joined the LSUS faculty in 1993 after working fifteen years as a private and public school teacher.
As the only full-time faculty member in music, Dr. Blakeney teaches Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Music Methods in Elementary Education, Beginning and Intermediate Piano, as well as a Seminar in Music History. She also maintains the Piano Lab, a state-of-the-art computerized facility that she has built with monies from a series of major grants.
Dr. Blakeney’s primary research interests include piano pedagogy and Romantic keyboard music. She has presented papers at the state convention of Louisiana Music Teachers Association and the Southern Chapter of the American Musicological Society, and her latest publication appears in the November 2004 of The Diapason. She is currently writing a computerized keyboard musicianship manual for beginning and advanced piano students.
Dr. Blakeney is well known as an accompanist for choral groups and soloists. She serves as a church organist and pianist, and last summer toured Australia as the accompanist for Shreveport Chamber Singers.
