Mr. Mackowiak received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northern Illinois University, in 1995. He earned his terminal Master of Fine Arts degree from Northern Illinois University in 1998 where he specialized in graphic design and interactivity. He worked extensively on interactive CD-Roms and Digital video editing techniques. Mackowiak joined the LSUS faculty in 1998. He worked as a junior designer for a design firm in Chicago for approximately a year between his Bachelor and Masters degree. While in Chicago he produced work for clients including McDonald’s, Paramount theme parks, American Heart Association, and Arthur Anderson.

Mr. Mackowiak’s interests include graphic design, video editing, and sound design. He has recently begun a crusade to bring a touch of design sensibilities to the campus around him. He has completed numerous projects for the American Studies Program and the LSUS Lincoln Center. His students have won numerous local advertising and design competitions. He welcomes non-art majors into his classes freely with the hopes of converting them to art majors. Although at the very least, he hopes to stop the plague of center-justified text being used throughout the region.

Mr. Mackowiak attributes his incredible outlook on teaching to the fact that he has had a truly unique life. He moved to Saudi Arabia at the age of one, and lived there for 12 years. This enabled him to travel the world with his family every year. He climbed the Pyramids of Egypt when he was ten, he nearly drowned in an aqueduct in Amsterdam when he was three, and he survived Hurricane Alicia in Galveston, TX and various monsoons and natural disasters worldwide. He has a very open mind, but he is not afraid to tell his students when their work is really, really bad.
