English
Students majoring in English receive a comprehensive background in British and American literature, with opportunities to explore in depth topics of personal interest. The introductory course acquaints students with various theories of literary criticism, how to apply them, and how to write analytically about literature. The upper-level courses allow students to study writers from the major periods of both American and British literature.

Students interested in writing can take workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as technical writing. In addition, upper-level students have the opportunity to participate in writing internships. We also offer courses in linguistics and the history of the language.

Those who have not yet decided on a major should read our Prospectus. Those who wonder what employment opportunities await one with a BA in English should read about possible occupations.
