Electronic Media Journalism
In our media-rich culture, learning how to produce and manage news in a variety of electronic formats is critical for anyone wishing to enter the field of broadcasting. Newscasters, editors, and production professionals are expected to write blogs and to produce short features for social networking sites as well as work in the traditional studio setting to create news programs for television and radio broadcast. LSUS students will work in the campus studio to produce feature programming followed by senior year internships at professional media production facilities in off-campus locations.
(Current Catalog Curricula*)

Journalism
The traditional field of news reporting for print publications now includes an exciting blend of web design, writing, and social networking as reporters move out of the newsroom and report from every corner of the world. Students will learn the basic skills of news writing and editing as well as media ethics and law. The weekly student newspaper, The Almagest, is published in both print and electronic formats, providing a wealth of practical experience for student journalists before going off campus to complete senior year internships in local media outlets..
(Current Catalog Curricula*)

Mass Communications
Students majoring in mass communications will prepare for careers in public relations, broadcasting, and print journalism by developing a wide variety of writing, speaking, and production skills tailored to the multi-media world of news. A new minor in film studies provides students with courses in critical and cultural theories of film analysis. Practical applications include work on the student newspaper, The Almagest, in both print and electronic formats, production work in the television studio, and a senior-year internship in a specialized placement.
(Current Catalog Curricula*)

Public Relations
Media students who wish to work in government or business will choose the public relations concentration. Courses cover the history and theory of public relations including a focus on media campaigns, work in the nonprofit business sector, and persuasive techniques. As with all mass communication courses, the public relations students will become familiar with computer design, new media broadcast techniques, and writing for social networking audiences. In the senior year, students will intern under the direction of a community professional in the field.
(Current Catalog Curricula*)

Speech
Students choosing to major in speech are well prepared to enter professions such as law and counseling where excellent speaking and listening skills are the keys to success. Careers in management, politics, and editorial writing are enhanced with courses that focus on critical thinking, supporting arguments, and skills in facilitating small group discussion. The award-winning debate team is a popular student-centered activity featuring off-campus travel and competitive speaking engagements throughout the region.

(Current Catalog Curricula*)

Theatre
Theatre students participate in both performance and production of an ambitious range of live plays on campus. Recent productions in the Black Box Theatre have received excellent media reviews, particularly those new and experimental plays with small casts. The program includes courses in the history of theatre as well as courses in acting, directing, and technical skills. Students are expected to participate in all areas of theatre, earning credit for work on stage and behind the scenes..
