The College of Liberal Arts pursues both the study and the practice of what are known as the “liberal arts.” By means of these arts, we engage in efforts to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature. In addition, we study the methods practitioners use in these efforts. Join us as we explore speech and journalism, literature and foreign languages, visual arts and music, history and social sciences.
At the graduate level we offer the opportunity to build a career in the nonprofit sector through our Human Services Administration program, and to fashion your own interdisciplinary program of advanced study through our Masters of Liberal Arts program.
These arts are “liberal” in the sense of liberating (from an ancient Latin word). When we pursue these arts we are “free from” the laws of nature, and “free to” follow our intuition and imagination. In these pursuits, we come to appreciate the ways in which humanity inscribes its image on the world, and we develop a spirit of toleration and rigorous intellectual honesty.
