Fall 2006 News

For Fall 2006, LSUS Computing Services has installed a new and improved student e-mail system which makes use of newer technology to provide better service and reliability.  As part of this change, we are:

  1. Reconstructing your e-mail address so that it no longer makes any use of your social security number. This change is another step in our project to remove social security numbers from general use at LSUS.
  2. Providing a new & improved web interface.
  3. Providing the LSUS administration a unified way to e-mail our students with important information and updates.

Useful Information:

Getting an Account
As part of the services provided to students through the collection of the technology fee, LSUS provides free e-mail accounts to all currently enrolled students. These e-mail accounts are generated automatically.

Your e-mail address is your last name, first initial and last two digits of your student ID.  For example, John Doe with a student ID of J930000012 would have an e-mail address of doej12@lsus.edu.

Your user name is your student ID number (for example, J930000012).  Your password will be the same password you use to access COMPASS.  If you have not previously changed it, your password is the month and day of your birth (for example, if your birthday is February 28, your password would be 0228).

If you have any further questions, please direct them to Computing Services via e-mail at webmaster@lsus.edu

Pop-Up Blocker Issues
If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you might be experiencing a problem when you try to reply to or forward e-mails. This is a known issue within Windows and the solution to fix it is listed below.

How to fix this problem:
If you have upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2, one of the security features embedded into this upgrade is the “Pop-up Blocker”. Computing Services does not recommend that you disable this useful feature, but we do recommend that you do the following simple workaround to fix this issue:

  1. Log into your LSUS e-mail account via the web.
  2. Using the menu items across the top of your browser, click on Tools (Located between Favorites & Help).
  3. Under Tools highlight “Pop-up Blocker” and select “Pop-up Blocker Settings”
  4. Once the window opens you will need to type the following into the “Address of Web site to Allow”: studentemail.lsus.edu
  5. Click on Add
  6. Now click Close.

This simple work around should fix your issue. Should you have any further issues, please do not hesitate to contact the Department of Computing Services at (318) 797-5221 or computing_services@lsus.edu.

F.A.Q.
Q. What is my username and password?
A. Your username is your student ID number (for example, J930000012 - NOT YOUR SSN #).  Your password will be the same password you use to access COMPASS.  If you have not previously changed it, your password is the month and day of your birth (for example, if your birthday is February 28, your password would be 0228).

Q. Can I setup my home computer to check my e-mail through Outlook, Outlook Express or any other type of POP3 or IMAP e-mail client?
A.

You can IMAP email to your Outlook/Outlook Express by entering studentemail.lsus.edu in Incoming Mail Server(IMAP) and the outgoing mail server (SMTP). Our server requires the "My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication "box to be checked in Outlook/Outlook Express.

Note: In the Advanced tab, The Incoming Server (IMAP) Port should be "993" and the "This server requires encrypted connection (SSL) box should be checked.

These images are for Outlook 2003. Other email clients will have similar configuration options.

Q. How do I delete multiple messages?
A. To delete multiple messages, hold down the CTRL key and select the messages that you wish to delete with your mouse.  Then click on the X icon on the top button bar to delete the messages you have selected.

Q. How do I view my sent or deleted items?
A. To view your Sent Items or Deleted Items, you must navigate to the proper folder. Scroll down in the Folders pane until you see the Sent Items folder.  Clicking on this folder will make your sent items appear in the central message pane.  To return to your Inbox quickly, just press the Inbox icon in the bottom left quick navigation pane.

If you are checking your e-mail from a public terminal, it is best to close out the web browser after you have finished.
