Beginning with the 2009-2010 award year, LSU Shreveport has been approved by the United States Department of Education to offer the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant to students who plan to become teachers. STUDENT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Be enrolled in at least six hours.
- Be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in the Department of Education.
- Master’s Degree students must possess a bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials.
- Teach LSUS students are not eligible.
- Be enrolled in coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching.
- Entering freshman must have a 3.25 high school grade point average (GPA); continuing undergraduate and graduate students must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA; and first-semester graduate students must have a 3.25 undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25.
- Undergraduate students who are classified as juniors or seniors are required to be in the Teacher Education and Retention Program (TEPAR).
AWARDING PROCESS
Complete the following steps:
- File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
- Complete entrance counseling at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/index.action .
- Print out the confirmation page at the end of the counseling session.
- Print out the TEACH Advisor’s letter which will be completed by an advisor in the Department of Education. The letter is located at www.lsus.edu/finaid/apply_forms.asp .
- Meet with a faculty advisor in the Education Department.
- Make an appointment with a staff member in the Financial Aid Office to review financial aid awards. Phone number for appointments is 318.797.5363.
- If offered a TEACH Grant, sign a revised Award Letter accepting the TEACH Grant.
- Complete the Agreement to Serve (ATS) at https://teach-ats.ed.gov / ats / index/action .
IMPORTANT REMINDER
Failure to complete the teaching obligation, respond to requests for information, or properly document your teaching service within specified time frames will cause the TEACH Grant to be permanently converted to a loan with interest.
Once a TEACH Grant is converted to a loan, it can’t be converted back to a grant! |
