- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid during January and February for the next academic year.
- Complete required income taxes before completing the FAFSA.
- Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for yourself (and one of your parents if you are a dependent student) at www.pin.ed.gov.
- If the answer is 0, put in a 0. Don’t leave any blanks on the application.
- Apply for all forms of financial aid on the FAFSA. You will be given a chance to accept or decline each type of financial aid offered on an award letter.
- If you are offered a Subsidized Stafford Loan but don’t need the funds, remember when an emergency happens later in the semester it will take several weeks to process a loan.
- If you have applied for financial aid and have not heard anything after about six weeks, call the office and check on your application status.
- Apply before the deadline dates, don’t wait until the day everything is due!
- LSUS’s school code is 002013.
- When completing a loan application use a ball point pen, do not double trace, press firmly.
- Learn who your student loan lender is. You are borrowing money that must be repaid and you need to know who your lender is.
