| Meredith Gaffney Nelson grew up in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Nelson completed her undergraduate work in Psychology at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in 1994. She received her Masters in Counseling from the University of Houston, Clear Lake in 1998. Her counseling experiences during her Masters degree included special education with emotionally disturbed adolescents, a juvenile correctional facility, and private practice. Dr. Nelson graduated with her PhD in Counselor Education from the University of New Orleans in 2001.
Prior to joining the faculty full-time at LSUS in the fall of 2001, Dr. Nelson’s previous teaching experience included courses at UNO and Delgado Community College at the adjunct level.
Dr. Nelson is licensed in Louisiana as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and is a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
She has received specialized training in sexual assault perpetrators/survivors, community mental health counseling from a multicultural perspective, and counseling children and adolescents.
Dr. Nelson’s recent publications have included chapters in the “Instructor’s manual for ethical, legal, and professional issues in counseling by Remley & Herlihy, 2000 Ed.,” the “Instructor’s Manual to James H. McMillan and Sally Schumacher’s Educational Research: A Conceptual Introduction (5th edition) and its companion website with Jeff Oescher (2001), and an article in the Journal of Mental Health Counseling (2002), “A survey of counselor attitudes towards sex offenders” by Nelson, M., Herlihy, B., & Oescher, J.
Dr. Nelson’s recent presentations at the 2002 American Counseling Association and the Louisiana Counseling Association include topics around, Asperger’s Syndrome, hostile and resistant teens, eating disorders, and counseling students who fail high stakes tests. |
