Master of Science in Kinesiology and Wellness
Program Description
The Master of Science in Kinesiology and Wellness degree is a professional degree to enhance graduate students’ academics and professional background in the areas of health and exercise science. The Master of Science in Kinesiology and Wellness provides this opportunity for health professional such as dieticians, nurses, physical therapists; wellness professionals such as fitness instructors or exercise specialists; and performance professionals such as coaches and teachers to continue their graduate studies.
Each student will be advised on combinations of courses from the following lists according to his or her professional goals. This flexibility is necessary in order to manage the curriculum for a variety of students, including those in teacher education, health professions, exercise specialists, and sport. Students’ program plans will be developed during the first semester of enrollment and will require approval by all KHS Graduate Faculty and forwarded to the Dean of the graduate school.
Admission Procedures
The following criteria must be met to be considered for unconditional admission to the MSKW program:
- Completed application received by May 1, of each year, in the graduate admissions office
- Students entering the program must have a baccalaureate degree with a grade point average of 2.50 on the undergraduate degree (4.0 scale) or 2.75 or better on the last 60 credit hours attempted in the degree program.
- A score of 850 or better on the sum of quantitative and verbal portions of the GRE.
Curriculum
Core courses (18 hours):
KHS 700 Seminar in KHS; KHS 701 Research Methods; KHS 722 Analysis of Movement in Sport & Exercise; KHS 723 Theory & Methodology of Training; KHS 725 Applied Exercise Physiology; KHS 741 Applied Sport Psychology
Specialty courses (12-15 hours): Approved electives:
Graduate courses in KHS or other appropriate curricula.
Each student will select 4-5 courses that logically fit career goals under one of the broad concentrations: (1) Fitness and Wellness, (2) Human Performance, or (3) Health Science. Selections will generally come from KHS courses, but interdisciplinary selections are encouraged as well. However, approved is required prior to registering for and taking these elective classes. Approval cannot be assumed.
