Welcome
to the Louisiana State University in Shreveport Department
of Kinesiology and Health Science website. With strong
academic faculty staff, the department offers a Bachelor
of Science in Elementary and Secondary Health and Physical
Education. The curriculum is designed following National
Association for Sport Physical Education Initial Physical
Education Standards.
The
Bachelor of Science in Community Health was initiated
Fall 2003. Community Health Educators examine the health
status of people and their actions to protect and promote
their health. Within the Bachelor of Science
in Community Health are concentrations in: American Humanics,
a certification for individuals interested in working with
non-profit organizations; Health Behavior, an area for
those individuals desiring more in-depth study of health
content and behavior; and Physical Activity, which is a
major means of reducing illness such as obesity, diabetes
and heart disease in society today. Completion of B. S. in Community Health prepares individuals for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination. For addition information about CHES visit the CHES website. Specific coursework in Physical Activity Concentration prepares individuals for: 1) American College of Sports Medicine ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor®; and/or 2) National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS) or NSCA-CPT Certified Personal Trainer®. The department is technologically
advanced in both clinical and instructional methodologies,
yet provides the attention expected in a learning community.
The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science has received Education Recognition Program (ERP) from NSCA for the years 2004-2010.

Departmental
faculty are actively engaged with Special Olympics, National
Girls and Women in Sports Day, weightlifting,
soccer, and conditioning programs for various sports. The
Department is the site of the Sport Science Institute,
a cooperative with LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.
The USA Weightlifting Development Center, the first and
most successful center in the country, serves as the keystone
for the institute’s studies. The center provides
an excellent base for research and internship/practicum
experiences for those individuals interested in strength
and conditioning.
