Dr. Gary Jones, new to the College of Education and Human Development, earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1976. Dr. Jones enters into the position of Department Chair after many years of service to psychology in both clinical and educational settings. Throughout his career, he has taken on many roles including consultant, director, supervisor, private clinician, and professor with his most recent position’s being Director of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Psychology Clinic.

Dr. Jones is an accomplished author in various areas and maintains an impressive list of book chapters, journal articles, and presentations. His programmatic research has largely involved the area of visceral perception, which is a person’s awareness or understanding of the state and function of their own visceral organs and organ systems. Visceral perception is the foundation of symptom perception, or one’s understanding of his or her own physiological health or well-being.

Additionally he maintains membership in a variety of professional organizations at the national, state and regional level including American Psychology Society, Society for Psychophysiological Research, Society for Behavioral Medicine, and Sigma Xi Research Honorary, just to name a few. In August 2000, Dr. Jones secured funding to seed research in the area of the impact of alcohol on gambling behavior at USM.

The CEHD is confident that Dr. Jones will enrich the programs in the Departments of Psychology and Education. The warmest of welcomes is extended to Dr. Jones and his wife as they relocate to the Shreveport/Bossier area. LSUS looks forward to the valuable contributions Dr. Jones is ready to share.
