The Master of Education (MED), a professional graduate degree, is designed to enhance and enrich students’ academic and professional backgrounds. The degree program consists of 36 semester hours and is tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. The program also allows students to seek additional certifications while pursuing the Master of Education degree. Additional certifications include Library Science, School Counseling, Ancillary Counseling, and Education Technology Facilitator. Secondary teachers are able to select a concentration in their discipline. Teacher certification is required to enter all MED programs with the exception of Ancillary School Counseling.
The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (MEDCI) offers two areas of specialization: a Gifted Education and Reading. The MEDCI in Gifted is a 36-hour program designed to prepare educators wishing to add the endorsement for teaching of the Academically Gifted to their certificate. The specialty courses explore the foundational influences of the field, the variations in characteristics of gifted individuals, and the learning differences which require effective instructional strategies and reflective practice. Courses provide the classroom teacher with tools such as acceleration options, problem solving strategies, and critical and creative thinking models to differentiate instruction to meet the special needs of gifted learners. The program meets National Association for Gifted Children and Council for Exceptional Children standards. The MEDCI in Reading is a 36-hour program designed to train and certify Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches. Requirements include 24 hours of reading, literacy, and leadership courses which provide theoretical bases of instruction as well as hands-on field experiences. Designed for teachers and administrators in all school settings and at all levels, the MEDCI in Reading meets International Reading Association national standards. Teacher certification is required to enter the MEDCI program in both Gifted and Reading.
The Master of Education in Educational Leadership (MEDL) program is a 36-hour, performance-based program of study. It is a preparation program designed for those aspiring to school principalship and other areas of supervision. The program promotes the understanding of the integration of knowledge and skills in educational leadership, based on Standards for School Principals in Louisiana (SSPL), Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC), and NCATE guidelines. Candidate development includes the acquisition of knowledge, integration of theory with practice, and the application of knowledge and skills in school settings. The majority of the coursework is designed with the incorporation of performance activities, culminating with an internship experience. Candidates are selected through an application and interview process. Teaching certification is required and three years experience is preferred.
