Welcome to the web site for the Department
of Education at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
The Department is housed within the College of Education
and Human Development and offers a variety of programs,
which are intended to provide initial and advanced training
for school professionals.
This
is an exciting time for our Department and for teacher
education in the State of Louisiana. Our undergraduate
and alternate certification programs have undergone dramatic
changes to conform to new requirements offered by the
Board of Regents. At present, we have programs
in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3), Elementary Education
(grades 1-5); and Secondary
Education (grades 6-12), including teaching majors in Biology,
Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, and Social
Studies.
The newly redesigned secondary programs
require that anyone majoring in Secondary Education
(with the exception of Social Studies) also have a second teaching
field. Certification in Health
and Physical Education (grades K-12) is also available
through our Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences.
Alternate certification programs have been re-designed
as well
and, for most students, mean a shorter route
to certification.
Our
Master of Education program continues to attract quality
students
and offers the flexibility to allow numerous options
to those students. Our graduate program provides opportunities
for certified teachers to gain additional endorsements
in areas such as Guidance and Counseling,
Gifted Education, and Library
Science. Recently added to our graduate offerings is a
Master of Education in Educational Leadership for individuals
aspiring to become building and district level administrators.
The new Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction
in Reading certifies candidates as Reading Specialists
and provides training as Literacy/Content Coaches.
We are enthusiastic about our new programs and we continue
to be proud of our students, faculty, and staff. Our graduates
are highly sought by area school systems and are moving
into a variety of educational leadership roles as well.
Our faculty continues to provide excellent instruction
and advising as well as to share their considerable expertise
through in-service programs, workshops, professional presentations,
and publications.
We hope that you find this web site useful. Thank you
for visiting us. Please contact us should you require additional
