Education
The
Department of Education offers undergraduate certification
programs in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education,
and the following areas in Secondary Education:
English,
Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
and Social Studies.
Post-Baccalaureate
Alternate Certification programs are also available in
Elementary Education,
Special Education and the
following areas in Secondary Education: Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics,
Physics, and Social Studies.
Three advanced degrees are offered: Master of Education (MED), Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (MEDCI), and Master of Education in Educational Leadership (MEDL). The Master of Education program includes certification in School Counseling, Ancillary School Counseling, School Library Science, and Technology Facilitation. Teachers with secondary certification may select a focus area in their discipline in the MED program. The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction includes certification endorsements in Gifted Education or as a Reading Specialist. The Master of Education in Educational Leadership includes certification endorsement as an Educational Leader I. A teaching certification is required for all programs with the exception of Ancillary Counseling in the MED program.
Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers
an undergraduate degree in Psychology and two graduate
degrees: Master of Science in Counseling Psychology and
Specialist in School Psychology.
The
undergraduate Psychology degree prepares students to
work as mental health technicians in various settings.
Many students go on to graduate degree programs at either
LSUS or other institutions.
The
Master of Science in Counseling Psychology degree is
designed for students who plan to work as Licensed Professional
Counselors either in private practice or related settings,
or in elementary and/or secondary schools. In addition
some students complete this degree as a step toward entry
into a doctoral program in Counseling Psychology.
The
Specialist in School Psychology degree is the highest
level degree offered by LSUS. This program prepares students
to perform the many professional tasks required of School
Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to be certified
by the State Department of Education and the National
Association of School Psychologists, and are qualified
to seek employment in public schools or other related
settings.
Kinesiology
and Health Science
Kinesiology
represents the discipline for sport and exercise science
and the Health Science disciplines that respond to the
health needs of society. The requirements for the Bachelor
of Science in Elementary and Secondary Education--Health
and Physical Education prepares students to teach both
subjects at the elementary and secondary levels; or a concentration
in Exercise Science and Wellness prepares students interested
in becoming fitness/wellness, health, and/or strength/conditioning
professionals. The Bachelor of Science degree in Community
Health prepares graduates to work in multiple health-related
settings such as hospital-based clinical wellness, cardiac
rehabilitation, public and private health agencies, and
non-profit organizations, as well as others.
Military
Science
The senior ROTC program at LSUS is voluntary. Successful completion of ROTC
will qualify students who desire to serve their country to be commissioned
as officers in the Army (on active duty), the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army
National Guard upon graduation. Students may minor in but not major in Military
Science.
