Academic Programs

The academic courses at LSU in Shreveport are offered in departments organized into four colleges.

The College of Business Administration includes the Departments of Accounting and Business Law, Economics and Finance, and Management and Marketing.

The College of Education includes the Departments of Education, Health and Physical Education, Psychology, and Military Science.

The College of Liberal Arts includes the Departments of Communications; English; Fine Arts, Foreign Language and Humanities; and History and Social Sciences.

The College of Sciences includes the Department of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Sciences, and Mathematics.

Degrees

LSU in Shreveport offers a wide variety of educational opportunities. The University offers programs in the following fields:

Accreditation

LSU in Shreveport is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, and specialist's degrees. All teacher education and the Specialist in School Psychology programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and National Association of School Psychologists. The chemistry program is accredited by the American Chemical Society. The Computer Science Program is accredited by the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board. All bachelor's and master's degrees in Business Administration are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

Weekend College

Weekend College allows students seeking personal or professional enrichment to take credit courses that meet one day a week on Saturday or Sunday. Students seeking a degree can apply credits earned in Weekend College to a bachelor's degree in General Studies. Some courses may satisfy requirements in other degree programs as well. Compressed Degree Plan

The Compressed Degree plan offers the student the opportunity to earn a degree within 3 years. The student must have superior ability and preparation, or must have already obtained a fundamental knowledge of subjects offered at LSU in Shreveport. The student must also demonstrate competence through a series of Advanced Standing Examinations in math, English, chemistry and foreign language. By earning credits for basic courses, a student may move on to higher level courses. Evening Classes

LSU in Shreveport provides educational opportunities to the working population of northwest Louisiana by offering late afternoon and evening classes on and off campus. Curricular guidance and advising are the responsibility of each college. Evening students must follow the same procedures for admission to the University as other students, including submission of applications, transcripts, and ACT scores. General degree requirements detailed under "University Regulations" apply to students attending evening classes.

Specialized Offerings

Honors Program

LSU in Shreveport offers an honors curriculum to highly motivated, high achieving students. The program enriches the educational experience by enhancing offerings in the university's general education courses. Success in the honors program will be reflected in students' permanent records. Students with ACT scores of at least 26 may apply at the Office of Academic Affairs (797-5167).

American Humanics Program

American Humanics is a leadership and academic program for students who are interested in entering professional positions in non-profit organizations. The American Humanics Certificate Program at LSU in Shreveport is designed to compliment a student's major. With minimal additional coursework beyond the normal required for graduation, students can be certified and prepared for careers with voluntary youth and human services agencies. American Studies Program

A sound knowledge of the history, culture, and values of the American experience is a vital part of the civic education of all students and is especially necessary in our complex times. The American Studies Program at LSU in Shreveport is a spirited attempt to meet this need. It is the largest privately endowed program at LSU in Shreveport and the most comprehensive American Studies Program in Louisiana, involving students, faculty, and the local community. The American Studies Program encourages innovative teaching and creative exploration of issues in the social sciences, humanities, and arts. The program sponsors forums, conferences, scholarships and fellowships, internships, and the unique Washington "Semester," a summer during which students live and work in Washington, D.C. using the city as a laboratory for the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Distance Learning

In cooperation with Louisiana Public Broadcasting, the Distance Learning program telecasts graduate and undergraduate courses via satellite. Some of these courses can help those with temporary teaching certificates earn certification in Special Education or Science. Courses in a variety of other areas are telecast periodically as well. Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium

This consortium, formed in 1979 to coordinate marine research and education within the state university system, comprises thirteen public universities. LUMCON provides field laboratories at Port Fourchon, near Grand Isle, and at Fearman Bayou, near Intracoastal City, where intensive five-week courses during each of two summer terms provide students with extensive field study of living organisms.

Council For The Development of French In Louisiana (CODOFIL)

French Study Programs in Belgium, France, and Quebec

LSU in Shreveport is a member of the CODOFIL Consortium of Colleges and Universities, which promotes the study of French in Louisiana. Students who major in French or French Education may qualify for a CODOFIL scholarship to study for a summer or a year in Belgium, France, Quebec, or the Maritime Provinces. Exchange Agreements Between International Universities and LSU in Shreveport

Under an agreement between the University of Mons in Mons, Belgium, and LSU in Shreveport, faculty, administrators, and students of the two institutions are eligible to participate in an exchange. For more information contact Foreign Languages (797-5198).

The University has established cooperative agreements with four universities in other countries: The University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland; Haaga Institute in Helsinki, Finland; Chung Yuan Christian University in Chung-Li, Taiwan; Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, India; and Berhampur University in Berhampur, India. Each agreement has three objectives:

¨ to enhance both institutions' academic programs and research projects

¨ to increase the cultural understanding of faculty and students

¨ to expand international understanding, encourage international business and trade, and strengthen ties between citizens of both countries.

Other Off-Campus Courses for Credit

The University offers credit courses off campus when groups request them and promise sufficient enrollment. The University arranges registration and the time and place of class meetings to suit the group's needs. While the class may meet at convenient times at a business, industrial site, or hospital, students earn credit as they would on campus, by attending a minimum number of class meetings, taking examinations, and completing out-of-class assignments. Non-Credit Offerings

The Division of Continuing Education and Public Service, through its Office of Conferences and Institutes, offers a number of non-credit courses, some of which earn the student Continuing Education Units.
